Shortly after the chief scientist’s announcement, Altman responded to his post with three heart emojis, seeming to indicate that no love had been lost between the two.
OpenAI ousted Altman as CEO on Friday afternoon, and the regretful statement was issued over the weekend after talks to bring him back to the company failed.
The board ousted Altman and announced Friday that it “no longer believes in his ability to continue to lead OpenAI.”
The blunt statement also said the former CEO’s “communications with the board have not been consistently candid, impeding the board’s ability to carry out its duties.”
After a series of roller coaster incidents over the weekend, Altman was considered to return to the top spot. According to The Verge, he gave the board a deadline of 5 p.m. Pacific time on Saturday to resign if he was to return. But the deadline was later extended to 5 p.m. Pacific time on Sunday after the board reportedly failed to resign and an agreement could not be reached.
Less than 24 hours after Altman shared a photo of him wearing a visitor badge at OpenAI’s office, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced he was joining the company. Greg Brockman, former president of OpenAI, will also join to help lead Microsoft’s “new advanced AI research team.”
According to Wired, Sutskever was one of 490 OpenAI employees who signed an open letter calling for Altman’s reinstatement.
The letter, shared Monday, shows employees threatening to quit unless the board resigns. It said the board had “jeopardized” and “undermined” the company’s mission.
“Your actions clearly demonstrate your inability to police OpenAI,” the letter said, according to Wired.
It continued: “The leadership team has advised that the most stable path forward – the one that best serves our mission, the company, stakeholders, employees, and the public – would be for you to step down and establish a qualified board to lead the company steadily moving forward.”
