Astrolabes were an important auxiliary tool for ancient astronomers and navigators to predict astronomical phenomena, calculate the position of stars and navigation routes. The oldest known surviving artifacts of astrolabes date back to the second century BC, and voyaging sailors used astrolabes to measure the height of celestial bodies above the horizon to determine the time and position of stars in the sky.
